Is It Safe to Wear Compression Socks While Pregnant?

That’s a very good question! When you are carrying your baby (or babies), you’ll be wanting to make sure that you do everything right for your body, and that goes further than just what you consume.

It’s not been long that compression socks have been recommended for pregnant women to wear, so it’s certainly understandable that you may have your reservations about whether they are safe or not. Sure, you know they help with reducing the risk of Deep Vein Thrombosis for air travellers, but are they really safe to wear when pregnant? Let’s find out.

What do the doctors say?

There is no harm wearing compression socks when you are pregnant according to doctors as they decrease common pregnancy side effects, but it’s a good idea to consult with your doctor before using them. This is so they can advise you on the best type to wear and also the right compression to use.

Not only do pregnancy socks reduce swelling and help with aches and cramping, but they also prevent varicose veins from developing and medical experts recommend their use for this reason.

Use the right type to reap the benefits

There are three types of compression socks that you can wear when you are pregnant:

  • Knee-high: Ideal for tackling feet, ankle and lower leg swelling.
  • Thigh high: For ladies who have cramping and/or swelling from their thighs down to their feet.
  • Full length: Useful for those who suffer from swelling that starts in their back down through their legs.

Correct pressure and correct sizing are key

While you are probably wanting to wear mostly loose clothing during your pregnancy, compression socks need to have just the right amount of pressure to do their job. You’ll also need to make sure that you measure yourself correctly to find the right size, as socks that are too small are going to be uncomfortable and hard to put on. Socks that are too big will not do anything for you.

When to start wearing them

A lot of women start wearing compression socks during their third trimester, as they find that this is the period when swelling, aching and cramping is most prominent. If you feel that you do need them in your first trimester, a compression rating of 20-30 mmHg is considered a good place to start by doctors. In your third trimester, or even at the end of the second, you’ll most likely want to increase this to 30-40 mmHg

When to put them on

Pregnancy socks can be worn every day, and you should put them on when you get out of bed in the morning and take them off at night. Putting them on in the morning means that your feet and legs are not as swollen as they are when you are moving around and will be easier to get on.
